Boats Shipping Guide

Everything you need to know about shipping boats.

Boat transport is a specialized service that requires carriers with the right equipment, permits, and experience to move watercraft safely over highways. Whether you are relocating a bass boat to a new lake house, buying a sailboat from across the country, or sending a yacht to a boatyard for service, understanding the logistics helps ensure a smooth move.

The biggest factor in boat shipping cost and complexity is the beam (width) of the vessel. Boats under 8 feet 6 inches wide can travel as standard loads on most highways without special permits. Once the beam exceeds that threshold, carriers must obtain oversized-load permits for each state on the route, which adds cost and may restrict travel to daytime hours. Very wide boats may also require pilot cars or escort vehicles. Always provide exact dimensions — length overall, beam, and height from trailer keel to the highest fixed point — so carriers can bid accurately.

Preparing your boat properly before pickup prevents damage and delays. Drain all water systems, livewells, and ballast tanks. Remove canvas covers, bimini tops, and any loose electronics. Disconnect the batteries and secure all hatches and doors. For sailboats, the mast must almost always be unstepped and secured on deck or in a purpose-built mast cradle. If you are shipping during cold months, winterize the engine, water systems, and any plumbing to prevent freeze damage in transit.

For boats without trailers, carriers use hydraulic trailer systems or custom cradles to support the hull during transport. This service costs more and may require a crane or travel lift at pickup and delivery. If your boat is stored at a marina, coordinate the haulout with both the marina and your transport carrier so the boat is ready on the truck at the scheduled time. Good communication between all parties is the single best way to avoid costly delays and rescheduling fees.
